Private Tuition in the Charity Sector

At BYT HQ, we are always keen to identify the expanding ways in which the nature of private tuition is changing and adapting.

As a co-founder of CornerStone Tuiton, Tom West has had a fairly busy year. Corner Stone are a Tunbridge Wells, Kent based charity that focuses on providing free one to one Maths and English Tuition to students for whom it would otherwise be inaccessible. After the recent success of his initial tuition programme in a local school, Tom sat down with us to talk about his experience.

“We were born from the vision of two university undergraduates, Tom and Sam. We are a young charity that provides free one-to-one tutoring for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Sam spent his year out working as a private tutor and noticed that due to the cost this hugely beneficial service is not available to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We both strongly believed that it should be accessible to everyone, and envisioned a charity that provides this service. We were officially registered in September last year and swiftly got to work organising our first tutoring programme.

This 8-week programme was for GCSE pupils in our home town of Tunbridge Wells, Kent. It was a relatively small operations comprising of 10 students and 10 volunteer Year 12 tutors from local schools. The close age gap and the tutors recent experience of GCSE’s was key in connecting with the students and honing in on specific areas for improvement — we were thrilled with the quality of tuition.!

We are extremely motivated by the positive feedback we have received since the end of our first programme and we are looking to begin two more in the next academic year. This is a massively exciting time for us and we are always looking out for volunteers and supporters to help us move forward!”
