The 11 Plus in Maidenhead

Teaching in Maidenhead

As we look to open our next tuition centre in Maidenhead in the Autumn of 2017 we explore the Maidenhead and Berkshire's grammar schools that apply the 11 plus tests. There are six grammar schools in and around Reading and Slough plus one that has a level of grammar school entrance and caters for all pupils. (Bilateral)

There is a Slough Consortium of admissions that help administer the 11 plus and thus using the same test papers and eligibility scores when choosing pupils.

Slough Grammar Schools:

  • Langley Grammar School
  • Herschel Grammar School
  • St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School
  • Upton Court Grammar School

Reading Grammar Schools

  • Kendrick School - All Girls
  • Reading Grammar School - All Boys
  • Reading School for Girls (Bilateral)

The 11 plus exams include verbal reasoning, numerical and non-verbal reasoning with two exams at 50 minutes each. The selective grammar schools use the CEM, ISEB & GL 11 plus.

Online registration is often required for the Slough grammar schools which make up the Consortium of grammar schools. Do note that there is a difference between applying for a school place and applying to take the 11 plus.

There are test centres around Berkshire that you are allocated once you have been entered into the 11 plus.

When applying to more than one school do note that if you are are applying to both Reading Grammar Schools and Slough Grammar Schools you must ask for your child's scores to be shared between schools. There is a standardisation process that takes places taking into account the child's age at the time of test and other variables so no pupil is at a greater advantage to another.

There is certainly competition across the Berkshire grammar Schools, especially the four Slough schools which are often over subscribed. The tests aim to recruit the top thirty percent of pupils that sit the exam which on a practical level means a score of 111 or greater.

It is important to note that the qualifying standard for the Reading schools can sometimes vary. Slough and Reading schools tend to apply their own criteria when there are more pupils that have reached the required marks then there are places.

At Bright Young Things' brand new Maidenhead tuition centre our dedicated team of tutors can help guide your child's academic process with our 11 plus classes in Maths, English and Reasoning.
